Husbands, Saffie dominate at Woodbine and Gulfstream
On Saturday, the 51-year-old Husbands guided Ticker Tape Home to the seven-furlong $135,000 Seaway Stakes (G3) for fillies and mares 3-year-olds and up.
Having trailed the field for most of the race, Ticker Tape Home reeled in Gal in a Rush with less than 70 yards to run and went on to notch a neck triumph in a time of 1:23.10. Queen Macha was third and Metaphysical was fourth.
Husbands then returned on Sunday to win the $201, 500 Simcoe Stakes onboard Scorching and the $201, 000 Muskoka Stakes with Souper Supreme, also at Woodbine.
Meanwhile, the Saffie Joseph-trained Comedy Town continued his domination of South Florida with an emphatic victory in the $96,000 Benny the Bull at Gulfstream Park on Saturday.
It was the second consecutive stakes victory and third straight overall for Comedy Town, who won the seven-furlong Benny the Bull by nearly two lengths ahead of fellow Florida-bred Loco Abarrio in second.
Loco Abarrio and Florida-bred Big Martini jumped out of gate first then were quickly overtaken by Vivir Con Alegria (Arg) on the rail as the six 3-year-olds and older came out of the backstretch chute.
Jockey Drayden Van Dyke kept Comedy Town on the outside in fourth and about two lengths off Vivir Con Alegria through a quarter-mile in :22.92 before inching closer to front in tandem with Big Martini to his inside heading into the turn.
Loco Abarrio took over from between horses past the three-eighths pole but had Comedy Town in pursuit on the outside and Vivir Con Alegria on the rail. Those three all had a chance at the top of the lane before Comedy Town pulled away in the stretch. He was a length-and-three-quarters clear under the wire to finish in 1:22.73 on the track rated muddy and sealed.
There were also wins for Barbadian jockeys Rasheed Hughes and N’Rico Prescod.
Hughes rode five winners at Century Mile and Edmonton, while also finishing fourth in the Canadian Derby, while Prescod won two races on Saturday including the $99, 000 Speed to Spare Championship Stakes with Varatti.
