Four held after Arouca supermarket robbery
Police have arrested four men from San Juan who are suspected of being involved in a daring armed robbery at a supermarket located at the corner of William Street and Lopinot Road in Arouca, on Thursday.
According to a statement from the Police Service, around 10:40 am yesterday (November 21, 2024), three men, one of whom was armed with a firearm, entered the supermarket and announced a robbery.
Guardian Media understands the suspects relieved a supermarket employee of various items, including alcohol, cigarettes, lighters, vapes, and the establishment’s DVR system, as well as cash representing the day’s sales.
Police say the suspects also robbed four customers of personal items, including cash, jewellery, a smartphone, and other valuables.
The men then fled the scene in a brown Nissan B-14 vehicle and headed south along Golden Grove Road, before proceeding east on the Churchill Roosevelt Highway.
The vehicle was intercepted in Maloney.
Its four occupants—aged 21, 22, 25 and 26 years, and all of San Juan—were detained. Officers also recovered a quantity of stolen items and seized a firearm along with 12 rounds of ammunition along Golden Grove Road.
Investigations revealed that the vehicle used in the robbery bore false registration plates. It has since been impounded at the Arouca Police Station.
Police officers from multiple units worked together to capture the suspects, including Arouca CID, Northern Division Task Force (NDTF) North and South, Northern Highway Patrol, Arima Gang Unit, and Emergency Response Patrol (ERP).
Enquiries continue.
