New mass poisoning in Mérida leaves at least 30 students affected

At least 30 minors from two institutions in the town of Ejido, in the municipality of Campo Elías in the state of Mérida, were affected by exposure to an unknown substance. This new case of mass poisoning occurs just a few days after another similar event will be recorded in the same area.

Security and prevention organizations transferred the students from the Enrique Arias high school and the Monseñor Jauri school in the town of Ejido to various healthcare centers after they presented various symptoms such as body allergies and difficulty breathing.

Gerardo Molina, health authority of the entity, said that at the moment They do not know what substance those affected were exposed to.

«We are together with the entire health team, caring for the group of patients who have attended the Urbano III Outpatient Clinic in Ejido, the Los Cedros Outpatient Clinic, the CDI. All of these patients are stable,” he noted in a report for Union Radio.

The representative of one of the intoxicated students, Yusnai López, said that her son saw his teacher faint and then his body began to itch.

The parents and representatives indicated that they are concerned about this problem that is gaining strength in the country’s educational institutions.

Authorities of the Campo Elías municipality hope that an exhaustive investigation will be carried out. So far, school activities have not been suspended in the entity’s institutions.

Second mass poisoning in Ejido in a week

This would be the second mass poisoning that occurs in the town of Ejido in Mérida in less than a week.

Last Thursday, November 21, 35 students and one adult were poisoned at the Alí Rodríguez Araque institution.

Firefighters went to the school, cordoned off the area and evacuated those affected. They reported that it was due to an unknown chemical compound.

Authorities from both Venezuela and other nations have warned about the chroming, a viral challenge that involves inhaling toxic fumes from metallic paints, solvents, glue, nail polish remover, deodorants, gasoline, insecticides and aerosol chemicals. Inhaling high amounts of these chemicals can create a brief euphoric effect, as well as dizziness, vomiting, heart failure and brain damage, and in the long term they can cause memory loss, lower IQ, depression, anxiety or difficulty concentrating.

Cicpc officials are investigating massive poisonings that have been recorded in the country since the beginning of November, a situation that has generated deep concern among parents, educators and authorities.
