Convergence demands the release of Biagio Pilieri
The political party Convergencia demanded this Tuesday the release of its national coordinator, Biagio Pilieri, three months after his arrest after participating in a protest, in Caracas, against the official result of the presidential elections of July 28.
«Today, our national coordinator Biagio Pilieri turns three months deprived of freedom for defending the values of democracy, freedom and the union that Venezuela deserves. But his spirit remains strong and so does our fight,” the group indicated in a publication on X.
Convergencia maintained that it has been 90 days of “injustice,” while saying that it will not stop raising its voice to continue demanding the release of Pilieri and all political prisoners in Venezuela.
They intercede for Biagio Pilieri
On November 19, the wife of the former deputy, María Livia Vasile, asked international human rights organizations to intercede to achieve the release of Pilieri, as well as other detained politicians such as Freddy Superlano, Américo De Grazia, the legal assistant of the majority opposition Perkins Rocha and others.
Vasile recalled, in a press conference, that the leader has been accused of five crimes, including “terrorism.”
How was Biagio Pilieri’s arrest?
Pilieri was arrested after participating in a protest called by the majority opposition, grouped in the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD), in rejection of the ruling of the Electoral Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ), which validated the controversial reelection of Nicolás Maduro in the presidential elections, as anti-Chavistas denounced at the time.
Opposition leaders and NGOs demand daily, through social networks, the “immediate” release of those detained for “political” reasons, including the nearly 170 members of parties who – they denounce – are behind bars.
Recently, the Venezuelan Foreign Minister, Yván Gil, assured that the Caribbean country is “free of political prisoners”, a statement rejected by anti-Chavismo and various social sectors.
