The Committee for the Freedom of Political Prisoners (Clippve) denounced over the weekend the serious state of health of political prisoner Terris Méndez, detained after post-election protests in Venezuelawho suffered a cerebrovascular accident (CVA) on Wednesday, November 27 in his cell at the Carabobo Judicial Internment in Tocuyito.

The organization noted that Méndez’s condition has worsened considerably, but the guards refuse to take him to a hospital for specialized medical care claiming that they must wait for a transfer order.

Rosa Escobar, mother of the detainee, made an urgent call to the authorities and He demanded that his son be immediately taken to a hospital for emergency care.

“My son only moves his eyes,” said the woman.

The Committee for the Freedom of Political Prisoners requested the intervention of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) so that Méndez can be transferred by ambulance to an appropriate health center.

They highlighted the serious violation of human rights and the lack of medical assistance to detainees in critical conditions in Venezuelan prisons.

The latest report from the Penal Forum indicated that the number of detainees for political reasons has reached an alarming record of 1,903 people, the highest number in the last 20 years. The vast majority of those detained are men (1,658) and civilians (1,741).
