Argentina, Panama and Uruguay demand that the ICC accelerate investigation into Venezuela

In a strong call to action, Argentina, Panama and Uruguay set their position at the recent Assembly of States Parties to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC)to urge the acceleration of investigations into alleged crimes against humanity in Venezuela.

The representatives of these countries stressed the need for the highest international court to act decisively, highlighting the crucial role played by the CPI in the search for justice in the face of such atrocities.

Mario Javier Agustín Oyarzábal, Argentine ambassador to the Netherlands, stated that Venezuela “cannot be considered a state of law,” given that its principles are “systematically violated and the democratic will of its population is deliberately ignored.” He denounced the siege faced by asylum seekers at the residence of the Argentine ambassador in the city of Caracas, currently in the custody of Brazil, and demanded decisive action in this regard.

The Panamanian ambassador, Jorge Corrales, expressed concern about the lack of progress in the investigations carried out by the ICC into alleged crimes against humanity perpetrated by the Venezuelan State.

“We express our deep disagreement with the slowness of the court prosecutor, despite the obvious violations of human rights in Venezuela. The human rights of Venezuelans have the same value as those of the rest of the world,” said Corrales, requesting greater speed in the process.

Uruguay reaffirmed its support for the impartiality of the International Criminal Court in relation to cases linked to Venezuela. In this context, Colombian Foreign Minister Luis Murillo reiterated his country’s commitment to the Rome Statute and underlined the importance of international justice to prevent impunity.

“The work of the court is essential to prevent the most serious crimes from going unpunished; It often represents the last hope for victims who seek an impartial justice system that materializes their legitimate aspirations,” Murillo concluded.
