The Argentine Foreign Ministry expressed its “utmost concern” about the situation faced by the six Venezuelan refugee opposition leaders at its embassy in Caracas.

In a statement issued this Saturday, the organization reiterated its strong claim against the government of Nicolás Maduro and demanded the immediate issuance of safe conduct permits that allow asylum seekers to leave the country safely.

“We demand from the Maduro regime the immediate delivery of safe-conduct passes that guarantee their safe exit. We call on the United Nations, the OAS and all countries to adopt firm and urgent measures,” said the Argentine Ministry of Foreign Affairs in its X account.

Likewise, they denounced the serious political persecution and risks faced by the six asylum seekers, who supported the presidential candidacy of María Corina Machado in the July elections.

According to Tomás Arias, lawyer for the opposition group, the regime has intensified the harassment of cutting off basic services such as water, electricity and access to food at the diplomatic headquarters. “The lives of these people are in imminent danger,” the statement highlights.

Edmundo González’s reaction to the demand for safe passage for refugees at the Argentine embassy

For his part, opposition leader Edmundo González commented that it is “a very important statementfrom the Argentine Foreign Ministry, about the siege of its embassy in Caracas. In addition, he requests safe passage for the 6 people sheltered at the headquarters.”

Four months after the controversial elections in which Maduro declared himself the winner, the repression against opposition leaders continues to escalate. The situation at the Argentine embassy is seen as an emblematic case of the intimidation tactics used by its administration.

However, Argentina has made its position clear: guarantee the integrity of political refugees and seek an immediate solution with the support of international organizations.
