Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay express concern about Venezuela
The presidents of Argentina, Javier Milei; Paraguay, Santiago Peña, and Uruguay, Luis Lacalle Pou, expressed this Saturday their “extreme concern” about the crisis that is being experienced in Venezuela and reaffirmed their commitment to the “defense and strengthening” of the country’s democratic institutions.
In a statement published on the official Mercosur website, they highlighted that the concern extends to the non-publication of the disaggregated results of the presidential elections of July 28, as well as serious violations of human rights and fundamental freedoms recorded in Venezuela.
Given this, they urged the government of Nicolás Maduro to grant the necessary safe passage for the six opponents asylum at the headquarters of the Argentine Embassy in Caracas and thanked the president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, for the protection granted to said headquarters.
Argentina demanded safe passage for opponents
The Argentine Foreign Ministry expressed its “utmost concern” about the situation faced by the six Venezuelan refugee opposition leaders at its embassy in Caracas.
In a statement issued this Saturday, the organization reiterated its strong claim against the government of Nicolás Maduro and demanded the immediate issuance of safe conduct permits that allow asylum seekers to leave the country safely.
“We demand from the Maduro regime the immediate delivery of safe-conduct passes that guarantee their safe exit. We call on the United Nations, the OAS and all countries to adopt firm and urgent measures,” said the Argentine Ministry of Foreign Affairs in its X account.
