CARICOM Heads discuss issues in WI cricket
The meeting comes one day after their engagement with Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, with the leaders set to brainstorm on the ongoing challenges confronting West Indies cricket.
Being chaired by Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister, Keith Rowley, the meeting, among other things, will look at key issues and recommendations emanating from the CARICOM regional cricket conference in April 2024 and will also review a proposal by CAGE international in respect of funding for West Indies cricket.
Additionally, an update will also be provided on the 2024 T20 World Cup which was co-hosted by the Caribbean, while the present CPL contract will also be reviewed.
During his contribution to the extensive discussions, Prime Minister Gaston Browne cited the urgent need for a reinvigoration of West Indies cricket and adoption of clear strategies to return “our cricket to the halcyon days of the past”.
He also agreed with the recommendation of commissioning a textbook or booklet, the development of a video, and placing West Indies cricket as a curriculum subject in schools across the Caribbean to help change the fortunes of “our game” while disseminating the history of the game across the region.
Browne argued that a dynastic study could help determine the elements that should be incorporated into the textbook.
“Our players require the deployment of soft skills, which are just one element of a transformational approach to a resurgence of West Indies cricket,” Browne told his colleagues.
