Machado considers the ICC prosecutor’s statement significant

The opposition leader María Corina Machado considered the statement issued this Monday by the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Karim Khanwho warned the government of Nicolás Maduro that the path of complementarity is running out.

In an interview with journalist César Miguel Rondón, Machado celebrated that Khan decided to dedicate a few words about the situation in Venezuela in his speech at the inaugural session of the Assembly of States Parties to the Rome Statute, in The Hague.

“The ICC today has given clear signals that it is going to move forward, international justice is going to move forward”said the opposition leader, who added that the Court has sent “an unequivocal signal to those who believe they are beyond justice.”

He highlighted that Karim Khan’s statement comes one day after the global protest held in more than 150 cities around the world to demand that the ICC act against the Maduro government for crimes against humanity in Venezuela.

«Protest does work; When we unite our voices, inside and outside Venezuela, the world listens and reacts,” he said.

What did the ICC prosecutor say about the situation in Venezuela?

This Monday, Khan urged the government of Nicolás Maduro to release the detained teenagers by state security agencies in post-election protests and other political prisoners in Venezuela.

“After this year’s elections, I insisted in my communications with Venezuela and in public statements on the need to protect the rights of civilians, including children, who should be released if they are detained for political reasons or anyone who was peacefully protesting«, he stated.

And he added: «Venezuelans have the same right to justice as the families I met in Libya or Bangladesh in the last two weeks. This is the most basic thing that can be said. But it is worth emphasizing.

He expressed concern about the lack of implementation of legal reforms in Venezuela and highlighted the urgency of accelerating justice efforts in the country.

“Complementarity cannot be an endless story. I have not seen the concrete implementation of laws and practices in Venezuela that I expected. That is why I want to make it clear that the ball is in Venezuela’s court. The path of complementarity is running out of steam,” said the prosecutor of the international court.
