Mendez lodges query against Cayman Islands

  • Nov, Sat, 2024

Despite their winning starts on the opening day of the Rugby Americas North (RAN) Sevens Tournament being hosted by the T&T Rugby Football Union, both T&T’s men’s and women’s teams generally struggled on day two of the competition at the Larry Gomes Stadium in Malabar, Arima Saturday.

The men’s best finish yesterday was a tame draw in Tier 1 with the Cayman Islands 17-17, which followed a disastrous loss to regional rival Jamaica 17-5.

In the women’s equivalent, which saw two teams from the twin-island Republic in action, the lone win against the Dominican Republic 15-0 summed up the difficulty on the pitch for the women in red, white and black, as the T&T ‘B’ went winless.

Apart from that the country’s ‘B’ team was hammered by Dominican Republic 33-0; and later was battered by the hands of Jamaica 35-0. However, the first team lost to Jamaica 12-10; to the Dominican Republic 15-0, and then later to Barbados and Mexico 14-12 and 22-0, respectively.

The teams have been jostling for places heading into the final day today, but the local men’s team considered a giant in the region, stumbled against the Jamaicans.

Later their concerns were further compounded when minnows Barbados were handed a draw with a dominant Canadian outfit after a heavy downpour forced the match not to be played.

Mendez, despite securing the services of United States-based Ruairi O’Farrell and Keon Sylvester for the tournament the team, led by Shakeel Dyte still could not stamp their dominance over the Cayman Islands in their third match.

Guardian Media Sports was informed that coach Larry Mendez has lodged a query against the Cayman Islands men in a 17-17 tie with the Cayman Islands reportedly for an incident that led to the Cayman Islands team scoring a try.

Should they win the protest, T&T will potentially jump into the second position behind the unbeaten Canada. The T&T men’s campaign started positively with a 12-5 victory over Mexico.
