Ministry reduces several fines and demerit penalties
The Ministry of Works and Transport has announced updates to the Demerit Points System under the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic (Amendment) Act, 2017, effective November 18, 2024.
These changes reflect revisions to fixed penalties and demerit points for specific traffic violations. The key updates are listed below.
Traffic Sign and Traffic Order Violations:
● Fixed penalty reduced from $1,000 to $500.
● Demerit points reduced from 3 to 2.
Parking and Standing Violations:
● Breach of parking restrictions, including standing for hire at non-designated places, penalty reduced from $1,000 to $500, with demerit points lowered to 2.
Vehicle Equipment Offences:
● Offences related to defective identification plates or vehicles without silencers remain at their previous fixed penalties but have reduced demerit points from 3 to 2.
Disability Parking Offences (New Additions):
● Using an altered, expired, or invalid disability parking permit: $2,000 fine, 3 demerit points.
● Failing to display a disability parking permit correctly: $750 fine, no demerit points.
● Failing to return an invalid disability permit: $500 fine, no demerit points.
