Moruga MP condemns rising violence after father, daughter murdered
The Member of Parliament for Moruga/Tableland, Michelle Benjamin, is calling on the National Security Minister Fitzgerald Hinds, and Minister in the Ministry Keith Scotland, to take immediate action to bring down rising crime and violence in her constituency.
In a statement following reports of the brutal slaying of Enrico Guerra and his five-year-old daughter by gunmen yesterday, MP Benjamin extended her condolences to the family of the deceased, and described their deaths as “tragic and senseless”.
“This heinous act of violence underscores a growing and alarming trend that we have been witnessing in our community. Moruga/Tableland, once a peaceful and close-knit area, has become a battleground for violent crime,” MP Benjamin lamented. “The rise in such incidents is not just statistics on a page; these are lives being destroyed, families being torn apart, and a community living in fear.”
According to the Moruga/Tableland MP, her constituency is one of many rural areas in the country that have been neglected when it comes to safety and security of the citizens there. Accusing the current administration of neglecting such areas, she challenged the government to prioritise vulnerable communities such as these, stating, “The current strategies are inadequate and are failing to protect our citizens.”
“We deserve to feel safe in our homes, our businesses, and our streets,” Michelle Benjamin said in her statement. “We need more resources, more patrols, and a comprehensive plan to restore peace and safety to our beloved community.”
“I call on both Minister Hinds and Minister Scotland to take immediate and decisive action to address the rampant crime in Moruga/Tableland. Let us honour the memory of Enrico Guerra and his daughter by ensuring that no other family must endure such pain and loss,” she added.
