OVP asks to guarantee access to health for prisoners with HIV: “The situation is critical”

Within the framework of World AIDS Day, which is commemorated every December 1, the Venezuelan Prison Observatory (OVP) warned about the serious situation faced by people deprived of liberty with HIV in Venezuela.

«This day also invites us to think about the rights of the most vulnerable people, including women and men deprived of liberty. In many prison contexts, access to information, adequate health services and timely medical care are still limited, which exacerbates the spread of HIV in these environments,” said the OVP in x.

In Venezuela, the NGO assured, the situation is particularly critical, since it is unknown how many inmates live with HIV, due to the lack of a prevention, care, treatment and epidemiology program with a focus on gender and sexual diversity in the prisons. Venezuelan prisons.

«This lack of public health policies in the penitentiary system not only puts those deprived of liberty at risk, but also prevents an effective response to the health crisis«he added.

From OVP they also expressed solidarity with the NGOs that work in the care of people with HIV and support the sick in prisons, and “we call on the authorities and civil society to guarantee adequate access to health, without discrimination, for all those deprived of liberty«.

“Recognizing the human rights of these people and ensuring their access to testing, treatment and prevention is essential to advance the response to HIV and promote more equitable justice for all,” the text concluded.
