Prime Minister Rowley Attends Naming Ceremony of the Queen’s Hall Auditorium
Prime Minister Dr the Hon Keith Rowley and Mrs Sharon Rowley attended the Naming Ceremony of the Queen’s Hall Auditorium in honour of the late Winifred Atwell last evening (Monday 23rd September, 2024).
Winifred Atwell was a pioneering Trinidad and Tobago pianist of the 1950s, renowned for blending classical music with “boogie-woogie” and “ragtime.” Her unique style led to chart-topping singles and global success, selling millions of records.
Delivering the feature address Prime Minister Rowley celebrated and acknowledged Ms Atwell as a pioneer and icon. Reflecting on Trinidad and Tobago’s Republican anniversary Dr Rowley said, “This country can do no less than to rediscover a woman (Winifred Atwell) of class who recognised us and took us to the highest heights before we knew ourselves.” He thanked Ms Atwell’s family for allowing the state to honour her accomplishments adding, “She has set standards that we will all aspire to attain.”
Minister of Tourism, Culture and the Arts Senator the Hon. Randall Mitchell was also present at the Naming Ceremony.
The ceremony was followed by the concert “Ivory and Steel, the Revival”.
