Producers from the Merideño moor articulate efforts to defend their production

In recent weeks, agricultural producers from the Merida moor have held meetings with their counterparts from other Andean states, to articulate efforts to protect national production, reported Andrés Ramírez, president of the Timotes producers association, Asoprotim.

Among the actions carried out, the producers from Merida attended a meeting at the end of October in the town of La Grita, Jáuregui municipality in the state of Táchira where several important points were discussed.

One of those agreed upon topics is “the creation of the Agricultural Exchangewhich allows prices to be set on a real basis and taking into account the 3 Andean states of Mérida, Táchira and Trujillo, since in the existing one, no one knows the parameters to set prices,” explained Ramírez.

The creation of the new Agricultural Exchange was presented by Asoprotim, who have been working with a group of young university students for this proposal.

In relation to the economic loss that the exchange rate differential and late payment, of up to 4 to 5 months, is generating for producers, The requirement of cash payment for the products was agreed. These payments will be agreed between the producers and the transporters or merchants, considering as a payment possibility 50% in bolivars and 50% in foreign currency.
