RESTORATIVE JUSTICE WEEK LAUNCH 2024
The Trinidad and Tobago Prison Service, in collaboration with the Penal Reform and Transformation Unit of the Ministry of National Security, launched its Restorative Justice Week celebrations under the theme “Crime Hurts; Justice Must Heal.” The event, held at the Prisons Sports Club on Monday, November 18, 2024, featured an opening ceremony and a compelling panel discussion on the role of restorative justice in addressing crime.
Observed annually during the third week of November, Restorative Justice Week promotes justice practices focused on healing and restoration. Unlike traditional approaches that emphasize punishment, restorative justice fosters accountability, reconciliation, and rehabilitation among offenders, victims, and the broader community.
During the launch, Commissioner of Prisons Mr. Carlos Corraspe and Minister of National Security Hon. Fitzgerald Hinds expressed their support for the initiative, emphasizing its potential to drive meaningful rehabilitation and foster a culture of healing that benefits the wider national community.
The panel discussion included contributions from The Honourable Madam Justice Lisa Ramsumair-Hinds, Deputy Commissioner of Police Ms. Susette Martin, Head of TTPS Social Support Services Ms. Aisha Price-Corbie, and inmate representative Ms. Shastri Jagroo. Their diverse insights underscored restorative justice as a critical tool in addressing the root causes of crime and supporting offender rehabilitation.
The launch marked the start of a week dedicated to raising awareness and encouraging dialogue on restorative justice in Trinidad and Tobago. This year’s theme and activities highlight the nation’s continued commitment to integrating restorative principles into its justice system.
