Rodríguez asks to judge Edmundo González for treason

The president of the 2020 National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez, asked this Tuesday to judge and condemn opposition leaders Edmundo González Urrutia and María Corina Machadoin addition to three other opponents, for “treason against the country,” which is punishable in the country with up to 30 years in prison, the maximum penalty.

The deputy also called for the prosecution of former mayor Leopoldo López and the former presidents of Parliament Juan Guaidó and Julio Borges, all in exile, like González Urrutia – presidential candidate of the majority opposition -, while Machado claims to be in hiding in the country.

Minutes before, Rodriguez He proposed establishing “new ways” of acting against the “criminals” who request and celebrate international sanctions against Venezuela, in a “special law” that the Legislature plans to discuss starting Thursday and approve next week.

These regulations will establish perpetual political disqualification against those who comment on “acts as lascivious” as – he said – asking for sanctions, of which Rodríguez accused González Urrutia – who has been in Spain since September -, whom the largest opposition coalition points out as the true winner of the July elections, despite the fact that the electoral body proclaimed Nicolás Maduro the winner.

Rejection of US bill

Rodríguez raised this new regulation during the discussion of an agreement in rejection of a bill approved by the United States House of Representatives, which complements the regulations that prohibit federal institutions of the North American government from hiring people or companies that have commercial ties with Maduro’s Executive.

In the opinion of the parliamentarian, this is a “new act of barbarism” that persists in one of the “most aggressive actions that the country has ever known” and that “has characteristics of crimes against humanity,” in reference to the sanctions.

The agreement, approved by the plenary session, establishes the repudiation of the “illegal” bill that according to the AN seeks to “increase the criminal imposition of unilateral coercive measures” against Venezuela.
