Smith: No one held for CCTV cameras spying on police

Back in May, the nation was shocked to discover that criminal elements had set up an elaborate CCTV camera system to monitor the police across the North Central Division (NCD).

But after extensive police investigations to date, no one has been arrested.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Richard Smith, who was the Senior Supt for the North Central Division, yesterday said despite intense efforts to find those responsible, the authorities had come up empty-handed.

Speaking during a media briefing at the Police Administration Building, Port-of-Spain, Smith revealed, “During the course of our investigation, we were unable to unearth the origin of these cameras.”

A total of 23 CCTV cameras were recovered in Tunapuna, Monte Grande and along St John’s Road, St Augustine, which were alleged to have been set up by a criminal gang operating along the East/West Corridor.

It was reported that the system was being used by gang members to monitor the movements of police officers, as criminal elements planned shootings and plotted escape routes to avoid law enforcement.

Smith said, “Based on how they were set up, we were unable to trace where they came from.

“Some of the lines that led to the DVR were removed and we were unable to actually find the source of the installation.”
