They claim that retired teachers did not heed the call to join the classrooms
William Figueroa, member of the leadership of the Venezuelan Federation of Teachers (FVM), recently assured that he call from the Minister of Education, Héctor Rodríguezfor retired teachers to rejoin the classrooms was not successful.
In an interview for Radio Fe y Alegría Noticias, Figueroa pointed out that it is not feasible for retired teachers to return to the classroom due to the low salaries and economic difficulties that the country’s educators have been going through for years.
He pointed out that the fact that Minister Héctor Rodríguez urged all retired teaching staff to return to the classroom demonstrates the high bureaucracy in the public education system.
“It is a clear demonstration that the minister’s call for retired educators to rejoin really failed. Currently we have wages of hunger and misery,” he said in relation to the announcement that Rodríguez made on October 8.
FMV demands decent salaries for retired and active teachers
Figueroa indicated The low salaries of teachers force them to carry out other activities to survive.
“It cannot continue that an educator is receiving a salary that does not reach 20 dollars a month. They are starvation wages, they are misery wages and, consequently, they are dedicating themselves to other functions for which they were not trained,” he stressed.
“Today we see educators selling things for which they were not trained; We see educators as taxi drivers and that is the reality that Venezuelan teachers currently experience,” he added.
