Wilson closes out with 400-yard free relay silver
T&T’s Zarek Wilson secured a silver medal as a part of the University of Alabama ‘A’ men’s 400 yards freestyle relay quartet on the final day of the University of Georgia Fall Invitational Swimming Meet at the Gabrielsen Rec Center in Athens, Georgia, on Friday.
Wilson swam the anchor leg behind Kaique Alves, Charlie Hawke and Toni Dragoja as they combined for a time of two minutes, 48.03 seconds to secure an automatic qualifying time for the NCAA Championships and the runner-up spot behind the University of Florida-anchored by Josh Liendo, who has T&T parentage, who took gold in 2:46.81 with Louisiana State University, third in 2:49.00
Following a time of 42.86 seconds in the morning heats, the 19-year-old Wilson also placed second in the men’s 100 yards freestyle ‘B’ final when he got to the wall in 42.77 in the ‘B’ final to finish behind the University of Georgia’s Tomas Koski winning time of 42.68 while another Georgia swimmer, Reese Branzell, was third in 42.98.
On Thursday, 19-year-old Wilson touched the wall in 46.61 seconds to take the top 100-yard butterfly ‘B’ final spot ahead of the University of Georgia’s Ruard Van Renen (46.74), and Louisiana State University’s Pawel Uryniuk who clocked 47.22.
On Wednesday, Wilson swam the fourth and final leg behind Tim Korstanje, Charlie Hawke, and Drayden Bell for a combined time of one minute, 16.82 seconds for the bronze medal behind the University of Florida (1:15.10) and Louisiana State University (1:16.47).
Wilson also had a fifth-place finish in the men’s 50-yard freestyle B final in 20.08 seconds for the 14th spot overall.
In the 400-yard medley relay, the University of Alabama ‘B’ foursome of Brendan Conmers, Trey Shells, Wilson, and Bell placed eighth in 3:08.79.
